Orissa faced unprecedented flood situation during the year 2008. Untiring efforts of the employees of ORMAS under the leadership of its Executive Director Sri BN Das, in terms of logistics arrangement for preparation & transportation of food packets to flood affected districts helped the Govt. in Revenue & Disaster Management Department of Orissa to mitigate the
effects of the floods. ORMAS also had played a very significant role in organizing relief operation in the aftermath of devastating Super Cyclone 1999 that had wrecked havoc in the coastal Orissa exactly a decade ago. The role of ORMAS was recognized by the Govt. of Orissa at a State level programme organized at Jaydev Bhavan, Bhubaneswar on 29th October 2009 on the occasion of the Orissa Disaster Preparedness Day & National Day for Disaster Reduction where Mr. Das received the felicitation from Hon’ble Chief Minister Sj Naveen Patnaik.
Constant endeavor by ORMAS to create an integrated network for marketing of rural products has helped in ensuring maximum remunerative prices to the primary producers. In addition to products like Pulses, Hill Broom, Honey, Leaf Plate ‘n’ Cups for which major intervention have been made, ORMAS has now stepped into establishing marketing network for roll agarbatti produced by women SHGs of the State.
For this, ORMAS has roped in ITC Limited , Chennai for the same. This arrangement will provide sustainable livelihood through additional income generation to rural women in the identified clusters. Establishment of fragrance & packaging unit in the state as planned by ITC in near future, looking at the increase in production base, will add more income to producer’s kitty. Around 3,212 agarbatti producers of 15 different blocks will be benefited during first phase. This will be replicated in the other parts of the state looking at the success of first phase.
In this regard an MoU was signed on 14/10/2009 between ORMAS, represented by Sri B. N. Das, Executive Director and ITC Limited, Chennai, represented by Sri V. M. Rajsekharan, Chief Executive Officer in presence of Sj. Naveen Patnaik, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Orissa, Sj. Prafulla Samal, Hon’ble Minister, Panchayati Raj, Shri T. K. Mishra, Chief Secretary and Shri S. N. Tripathy, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Panchayati Raj Department and Chairman, ORMAS.
Besides using the medium of Exhibitions to reach to the ultimate consumers with rural products, four no. of shopping points have been opened in four Reliance Fresh outlets of Bhubaneswar at Gopabandhu Square, Baramunda, Bomikhal & Shahid Nagar which are in operation since February 2009. Functioning of these
outlets is looked after by the SHG federation “Shakti Swarupa BMC Mission Shakti Federation, Bhubaneswar” which handles procurement of products from different district.
With the joint initiatives of ORMAS and Mision Shakti, product based clusters have been evolved. The products of such clusters need immediate marketing support by way of trade tie-ups, labeling and packaging etc. Because of time constraints in today’s busy life, most of the consumers who require daily need items will prefer to buy the products withattractive packaging at market
price at their doorstep. Taking this as an opportunity, DSMS, Cuttack (the district unit of ORMAS) started the new marketing concept “Bazaar on Wheel” which will benefit both consumers, who will get hygienically prepared daily need items at their door steps & the producers, who can be able to generate a large volume of sale leading thereby to increase in profit.
For this project tie-up has been made between DSMS, Cuttack & “M/s Nirmal Tarang, Cuttack” for sale of products of the SHGs by moving door to door through mobile vans in the twin city. Products like Mudhi & Honey of Mayurbhanj, Turmeric of Kandhamal, Pickles of Ganjam, Kendujhari Phula Badi etc. in packaged form with proper label & brand are procured by M/s Nirmal Tarang, Cuttack
for door-to-door sale in mobile vans in the twin city (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack).
Micro Entrepreneurs are also encouraged to take up business of SHG products. To encourage this Dist. Administration, Cuttack has come forward with a unique idea of giving bicycles to people for door to door sale.
